The city of Purvis is located in Lamar County and is part of the Hattiesburg, MS metropolitan statistical area. From Hattiesburg, the city is located a few miles south off of Interstate 59. Residents of Purvis can also travel to Hattiesburg via Highway 589, Highway 11, Old Highway 11 or I-59. Thomas Purves is the founder of Purvis, and his third son, John Purves was the first mayor. The name derived from Thomas’s last name, and became “Purvis” after the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad gained possession of Thomas Purves’s property, in which they built a depot with a marker reading “Purvis”. Thomas even changed the spelling of his last name to match the city.

Purvis’s public school system is part of the Lamar County School District and consists of Purvis Lower Elementary, Purvis Upper Elementary, Purvis Middle School, and Purvis High School. The mascot for Purvis public schools is a tornado. Purvis schools strive to offer a more personalized learning environment to help each student succeed and experience success. This symbolizes the tornadoes of 1908 which cost many lives as well as changing the face of the developing town. The private schools within Purvis are Lamar Christian School and Bass Memorial Academy.

 

The founder of Hudson Salvage company, Billy Hudson Sr. was born in Purvis. The current mayor of Purvis is Robert H. Herrin. Purvis offers small town living with all the perks of big city living, with plenty of shopping, chain and locally owned restaurants, tanning salons and more that are all located in the heart of the city and only a few minutes away from residential areas. Purvis’s proximity to Hattiesburg is also an added convenience because all the major retailers, hospitals and restaurants are just minutes away.
